Obstacle Course Poster Contest

(L/R) Freshmen, Ry Ann Gavin, Nicole Marsalisi, Beth McCaskey, & Becky Willms
April 2008....Nancy Polinger, Physical Education teacher challenged her
students to create an obstacle course in a poster contest. The winners
of the poster contest got the opportunity to be the teacher for their class
for the day and presented the obstacle course to their classmates.
Class activity brings out leaders

Many of my sophomore ethics class participated in an
experiental activity the morning of April 16th.
They were challenged to cross a span of about 10 feet
without touching the ground or allowing a drop of water
spill out of a pie plate.
They had to start over a number of times before they were
successful. The class discussion to follow focused on how
this activity is similar to “being” church. In 1 Corinthians
chapter 12 we hear that even though there is but one body
there are many parts. The body of Christ (the church) has
many parts; all are just as important as the other. In our
outdoor activity we saw some students seek leadership
and were quick to participate and others sought the
background and were slow to step forward. We also saw
how some people helped others while others left each other
alone. As the church, we are called to fully participate. The
church needs good people to step forward and lead. The
church needs good people to offer a helping hand to others.
At times “being” church might seem like you are taking a risk.
The Gospel is not always comfortable for us – it calls us to take
that risk…to step out of our comfort zone…to have faith.

"Class Experiment "... Light The Way"

On Wednesday, January 30, 2008, Mr. Geof Kledzik’s theology classes had an opportunity to experiment with a Native American tradition of using tinder fungus as a way of lighting a new fire. Traditionally, Native Americans had to use friction to create a fire, which took a lot of time and energy. They soon learned that tinder fungus, when placed in a fire, will continue to burn as an ember and remain hot for hours. When they traveled to a new campsite, they would hold it against dry grass and flames would appear.
There is a powerful symbol in this tradition. The Native Americans would “carry the light” on their journey. Fire meant “life” for them; it enabled them to stay warm, cook their food, and communicate with each other. Throughout the country, Catholic schools are celebrating Catholic Schools Week , “Catholic Schools Light the Way”. In the same way, the Native American carry the light of their fire with them as they journey. We too, as a faith community, are called to carry the light of our Savior with us on our way.
Students from other classes thought something was different about Mr. Kledzik’s students because they had the aroma of smoke on their clothes – it was obvious. As a faith community, our light that we carry within us should light the way for others. It should be obvious that we are faith-filled people! Go light the way!

Physics Teacher Awarded Grant
by Princeton University

Physics teacher, Mr. Daniel Noyes was awarded a grant for a proposal he wrote while studying at Princeton University’s Plasma Labs. While at Princeton, Mr. Noyes studied the concepts behind plasma fusion, did experiments with plasma and designed a lab that could be used to teach plasma principles to high school students. His studies also included a visit to the U. S’s newest and best fusion reactor that was under construction at the time which offered an opportunity to dialogue with the reactor’s engineers. Mr. Noyes will use his grant money to purchase lab equipment for his Physics class.
