Clearwater Central Catholic High School Partners with St. Petersburg College to Offer Dual Enrollment for Students on CCC Campus

St. Petersburg College (SPC) is partnering with Clearwater Central Catholic High School (CCC), to offer dual enrollment opportunities for students who qualify for this early college program. Teachers at CCC have earned credentials as adjunct SPC instructors and are qualified to teach college-level courses to high-achieving high school students.

“This will allow CCC juniors and seniors to earn college credits as they finish up the final two years of their high school curricula,” said Jeff Cesta, director of Early College/Dual Enrollment at St. Petersburg College.

“We have teachers who are now going to be adjunct college professors, and who will be teaching five different college courses on the CCC campus. Classes offered will be Biology, Drawing/Painting, Ceramics, Photography and Psychology, said Rita Torres, Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs at CCC. “We are extremely excited to be able to offer these classes on the CCC campus.”

Juniors and seniors at Clearwater Central Catholic will be able to remain motivated in their final high school years as they earn college as well as high school credits. “By taking dual enrollment classes students can take with them up to two years of college credit when they graduate from CCC. It prepares them for the next phase of their life and gives parents more value for their dollar because students can have most of the first two years of college done when they graduate from high school,” said. Mrs. Torres.

CCC faculty that will be teaching dual enrollment classes at the school will be: Ms Andrea Obenland, Mrs. Melanie Kling, and Mrs. Jeannette Gasper.

DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM

Dual Enrollment courses are college level courses credentialed by the state of Florida as well as the state university system.  Students enrolled in these courses have the opportunity to earn high school credit in pursuit of Florida high school graduation requirements while simultaneously earning college credit toward a degree in the Florida State University System.  Some private collages as well as schools outside Florida may accept at their own discretion credit for these courses as transfer credits.  Courses designated in this catalog as Dual Credit are administered by St. Petersburg College.  Course content, syllabus, and textbooks must also be sanctioned by SPC.

To enroll in a Dual Enrollment course, a student needs to meet the following criteria as established by St. Petersburg College.

             • Maintain an unweighted minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

             • Receive a passing score on the CPT, SAT, or ACT.

 Passing Scores:

CPT

            Reading                       83+

            English                         83+

            Math                            72+

SAT

            Critical Thinking         440+

            Math                             440+

ACT

            English                         17+

            Reading                       18+

            Math                             19+

Qualified students who participate in a Dual Enrollment course earn an additional 1.0 quality point.  Quality points are awarded based on an earned grade of C or higher in the course.  St. Petersburg College requires that any student who receives a semester grade of C or lower in a Dual Enrollment course or who fails to maintain the minimum 3.0 unweighted cumulative GPA be dropped from the Dual Enrollment Program.

ABOUT ST. PETERSBURG COLLEGE

St. Petersburg College was founded in 1927 as a two-year institution of higher learning. Known then as St. Petersburg Junior College, it provided high-quality, fully-accredited programs with credits that were fully transferable to four-year institutions. In 2001, the Florida Legislature passed legislation allowing the college to offer four-year degrees. In response, the college dropped the word “junior” from its name and became St. Petersburg College. Today, St. Petersburg College offers programs at learning sites in St. Petersburg, Seminole, Clearwater, Tarpon Springs and elsewhere. It also offers courses and degree programs online.
