SOPHOMORE CLASS - BUILDING HOPE FOR THE HOMELESS

Mary Alice Beck, a sophomore at Clearwater Central Catholic High School holds her hammer firmly as she taps the head of a nail into the side of a wooden panel. She and more than one hundred of her classmates gather next to the school’s baseball field to assemble 10 wooden platforms. When the work is complete, the 11-by-11 foot platforms will be delivered to Pinellas Hope, a homeless shelter for adults. (click here for more...)

Students & Faculty Volunteer
for Habitat for Humanity in Kentucky
For eight CCC seniors and three faculty members, Easter break was spent volunteering with the Phelps Area Habitat for Humanity in Kentucky. The students assisted two families by shingling a roof, pouring concrete, and building a porch for one family and assisting with the demolition of another family’s Habitat home which had been destroyed by fire. Students participating in this spring break service trip, an annual tradition, were Eric Spicer, Caitlin Whittington, Michelle Hedrich, Angela DelPrete, Caitlin Cornnell, Sara Sardano, Chris Owens, Michael Lovera; and the faculty members who participated were Marcus Fresia (CCC class of 1999), Andrea Obenland and Teresa Newton. The group ended the week exhausted but renewed by the hope given to the two families that were helped.

City of Clearwater Selects CCC
as Service Group of the Quarter
January - March 2008

Every year Clearwater Central Catholic High School (CCC) sends a group of students for service learning. We were lucky enough to not only get their students this year, but we also completed a project with the faculty. Both groups tackled the trash and debris along the Memorial Causeway. We truly appreciated their continued support of our programs and were proud to see that not only their students, but their faculty helped this year. Great job and thanks for all you do for the community.

CCC Faculty and Staff Retreat
Serves Wider Community

On Friday, February 15, 2008 Clearwater Central Catholic High School (CCC) faculty and staff traveled to several agencies in the Tampa Bay Area to help build houses, clean park grounds and care for babies, the elderly, homeless and disabled. CCC administrators wanted to give their employees a chance to serve the wider community, to work and grow together in fellowship and to reflect on Christian service and the importance of sharing with those who are less fortunate. “Nothing is more inspiring than helping others…we wanted to model what we expect of our students”, said principal James W. Deputy. The faculty and staff worked from approximately 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at the following agencies: Moccasin Lake Nature Park, Kimberly Home Pregnancy Resource Center, Neighborly Care Network, Habitat for Humanity, Pinellas Hope, UPARC, Metropolitan Ministries and Clearwater Parks and Recreation.

Sisters of Notre Dame - Summer Experience
On June 24, 2007 seven students accompanied me on our annual trip to Cleveland Ohio for the Sisters of Notre Dame (SND) Summer Service Experience. When we arrived on Sunday we were shuttled to our retreat center where we met students from Cleveland area Catholic schools who were also sponsored by the SND for this experience. After getting to know them, we took a bus ride to downtown Cleveland and to some of the neighborhoods in which we would be volunteering for the week. The students were divided into groups to volunteer in various agencies including homeless shelters, crisis pregnancy and adoption homes, soup kitchens and thrift stores. At the end of each day, the students shared their experiences and reflected during prayer services that were led by either the sisters or teachers from the Cleveland schools. On Wednesday, the parents of the Cleveland students joined us for a picnic and mass. Before returning to Florida on Thursday, we toured Notre Dame College and the SND motherhouse in Chardon, Ohio.
"When I came back to Florida from Chardon, I felt like a truly changed person.
Nothing can compare to the time I had or the memories I made there.”
Mackenzie Danielson ‘09
“Cleveland was a great trip. It really was good to see how we were helping all the
people there.” Chis Owens ‘09
“Chardon was a great experience! I had a lot of fun helping so many people and
I hope I can go next year.” Michael Lovera ‘09
Student volunteers for this trip were: Julia Foacaracci ’08, MaryJane (MJ) Jachens ’08,Chris Owens ’09, Michael Lovera ’09, Chris Dris ’09 and Mackenzie Danielson ’09.
Students Recognized for Fundraising Efforts

Christine Ochsner ’08 and Megan Shanahan ‘09 had an amazing experience last week in Washington D.C. as guests of the Save Darfur Coalition in recognition of CCC’s fundraising efforts. Christine and Megan witnessed a Congressional hearing, heard first-hand testimony of the genocide and suffering of the refugees in Darfur, were treated to a reception in the Capitol attended by several Congressmen, attended a protest rally in front of the Sudanese Embassy, had a behind-the-scenes' tour of the Capital and met with a Darfur refugee in the National Holocaust Museum. CCC was presented a plaque for being a top-ten fundraising school out of approximately 2500 schools.
