National Honor Society Membership Application Process
- In January of the junior or senior year, all students with a 3.50 or higher GPA will be invited to apply to the National Honor Society.
- Students will be given an application that must be submitted by a deadline. This deadline is generally the end of January or the first week of February. In order to complete the application students must:
- Obtain signatures from coaches, teachers, and other leaders certifying their participation in activities on the application
- Complete essay(s)
- Turn in seven copies of the completed application to the club moderator
- Save one copy of the application for yourself for college applications
*****Recommendation****
Do not procrastinate about getting signatures and fill out the application as completely as possible. Do not be humble.
- An anonymous faculty committee will meet to review membership applications. This committee will decide which students are accepted into NHS based on their experiences with the student in the classroom and the application. The faculty committee votes on all membership decisions for NHS. The NHS moderator does not vote on membership decisions.
- Students will be notified by mail of their admission or denial into NHS in mid-February.
- Admitted students must attend the official NHS induction ceremony in March to be an official member per NHS Constitution rules. Parents are also encouraged to attend this prestigious event.
- The decisions of the faculty committee regarding NHS admission/denial are considered final. Students and parents who wish to discuss the outcome of these decisions may contact the club moderator.
-
Students must maintain a 3.50 GPA, pay dues, participate in service, participate in induction, and uphold high moral standards in order to remain in the National Honor Society.

Selection Procedure
1. In January, the NHS advisor will obtain from the Guidance Department a list of the juniors and seniors who have a minimum grade point average of 3.50 and above.
2. The Advisor will then make available a Student Information Form so that all students may list their school and community activities as well as school and community service.
3. In addition to the Student Information Form, students will be asked to submit an essay defining and describing the ways in which they exemplify leadership, character and service. This essay should be no more than two pages in length, double spaced.
4. The Student Information Form and essay is presented to the Faculty Council.
5. The selection of members to the chapter shall be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council.
Grounds for Dismissal
Members who fall below the National Honor Society standards, which were the basis for their selection, may be dismissed from the society. Two examples include a student whose grade point average falls below 3.50 for more than one semester, or a student who flagrantly and/or repeatedly violates school rules and/or civic law,
Dismissal Procedures
Members who fall below the standards that were the basis of their selection shall be promptly warned in writing by the NHS advisor and be given reasonable time to correct the deficiency; no warning shall be given in the case of a flagrant violation of school rules and/or civic law.
This warning procedure is ordinarily initiated by the NHS advisor, although violations of standards can be pointed out to the advisor by members of the faculty and administration.
Failure to remedy the deficiency after a written warning shall result in a hearing by the Faculty Council concerning impending dismissal. In all classes of impending dismissal, a member shall have the right to a hearing before the Faculty Council. The student will be informed of the action taken as a result of any hearing within five school days after the hearing.
A member who has been dismissed may appeal the decision of the Faculty Council. One final letter of explanation can be drafted and submitted to the Appeals Board. The Appeals Board and the Principal will then make the final decision.
Students who resign or are dismissed from the National Honor Society will remain ineligible for future membership or its benefits.
