In March, with the stay-at-home order issued and students transitioning to virtual learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a traditional auditorium commencement ceremony seemed out of the question for the Class of 2020. School administrators, however, never gave up on the idea of finding a way for the students, families, faculty and staff to come together in celebration. On Sunday, May 24, 2020, the originally scheduled graduation date, 138 graduates and their families traveled to campus in decorated vehicles for the most unique graduation ceremony in CCC history—or anywhere else for that matter.
Students arrived in family sedans, SUVs, Jeeps, passenger vans, pick-up trucks, chartered trolleys, and limousines decked out in graduation, Marauder and college motifs. After wending their way around the parking lot and past the giant Marauder helmet, cheering faculty, and TV cameras from local news channels 8, 13 and 9, cars stopped before the commencement stage where the graduates exited their vehicles to walk across the stage to be congratulated by CCC’s President Dr. John Ventuella and Principal Mr. James Deputy. Names were announced via FM 87.7 for everyone along the parade route to hear and the entire ceremony was live streamed via CCC’s Facebook page.
Capping off this unique graduation ceremony was a special video commencement address from distinguished CCC alumnus and Microsoft Senior Vice President Joe Belfiore ’86 who encouraged the graduates to be optimistic and have courage, thoughtfulness, and integrity.
